Sardar Masood Khan took oath of office of the President Azad Jammu and Kashmir on August 25, 2016. He was elected to the office by the AJK Legislative Assembly and the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council on August 16, 2016, as the 27th President of the Azad State of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sardar Masood Khan was nominated by the Muslim League (N) Azad Jammu and Kashmir as their Presidential candidate. Prime Minister AJK  Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan proposed the name of Sardar Masood Khan on behalf of his majority parliamentary party. After taking oath, Sardar Masood Khan thanked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and AJK  Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan, the AJK Assembly and the AJK Council for reposing full confidence in him. 
Leaders from Azad Kashmir, the Indian Occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, as well as community leaders from Kashmiri diaspora community in North America, Europe and the Gulf States congratulated him over his election.
Prior to getting elected as the President of AJK, Sardar Masood Khan had a long diplomatic career with the Foreign Service of Pakistan. Most notably, he served as the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2005; Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2005 to 2008; Pakistan's Ambassador to China from 2008 to 2012; and Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Headquarters, New York, from 2012 to 2015.
In his earlier diplomatic career, he held important diplomatic positions in China, The Netherlands, United Nations (New York) and the USA (Washington D.C).
Over the years, he has also held leadership positions in the international community which include President of the Conference on Disarmament, President of the Biological Weapons Review Conference, President of the Governmental Group of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Chairman of the ILO Reform Committee, Chairman of the Council of the International Organization for Migration, Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Geneva and Chairman of the Group of 77 and China.
In New York, Sardar Masood Khan represented Pakistan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2012 to 2013 and became the President of the Security Council in January 2013. While in New York, he was also the Vice President of the Economic and Social Council, Vice President of the UN General Assembly and President of the Executive Board of UNICEF.
Sardar Masood Khan also remained Pakistan's Chief Negotiator for the Nuclear Security  Summit process from 2009 to 2015. After taking the oath as President Azad Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan reiterated his strong resolve to work for the realization of the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Two other pressing priorities for the Azad Government, he said, were good governance and accelerated economic development. 
Sardar Masood Khan has a proven record as a campaigner for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions, end to Indian atrocities, and the initiation of a sustained, substantive and structured dialogue process to resolve disputes between India and Pakistan.
Over the years, Sardar Masood Khan has worked hard in the United Nations and various capitals to build support for the realization of the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. During his tenure as Permanent Representative to the United Nations he reached out to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and UN Human Rights Council to persuade them to fulfill the UN’s promise to help decide Kashmir’s political future through a fair, just and democratic mechanism.
In August 2013, he helped organize the UN Secretary General Ban’s first official visit to Islamabad during which the Secretary General had, inter alia, detailed talks on Jammu and Kashmir with the Prime Minister of Pakistan. On that occasion, the Secretary General offered his mediation and good offices to India and Pakistan subject to their concurrence. 
Earlier, as a delegate, for years, Sardar Masood Khan highlighted in the UN General Assembly, the Third Committee, and the Human Rights Commission the massive, gross and consistent human rights violations in IOK against the people of Jammu and Kashmir. In this endeavor, he received scores of delegations of political leadership and human rights activists from both Azad Kashmir and the Indian Occupied Kashmir for their participation in the conferences at the UN bodies and other international forums.
During his five year stint in Washington D.C., he worked to urge the US Administration and Congress to help Kashmiris secure their liberty and freedom. He also spoke widely on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at the American universities and think tanks, as well as to the international media.
Sardar Masood Khan has a solid track record of effective international leadership in diverse matters encompassing peace and security, nuclear diplomacy, prevention of proliferation of biological weapons, social and economic development, E-governance, migration, and international humanitarian law. Further, areas of his specialization include Kashmir, South Asia, Pak-China relations and Pak-US relations.
He is a respected diplomat and negotiator of international standing in the UN, the Islamic world, the Western countries and China. He is known in the international community for his result-oriented diplomatic skills. He is an accomplished speaker both in English and Urdu.
He studied the Chinese language from a Chinese university and has served in China for eight years to promote Pakistan-China relations. In 2015, President Xi Jinxing conferred on him the highest Chinese award for promoting Pakistan-China friendship. 
In his twenties, he was also a renowned broadcaster, an English newscaster and a TV anchor.
